Assassination Attempt on Pakistan Prime Minister

James Joyner | September 03, 2008

Shots were fired at Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's motorcade near Islamabad's airport on Wednesday but officials and police said he was not in it at the time. Suspicion naturally rests with the Pakistani Taliban and al Qaeda, given their involvement in other recent assassination plots, but the investigation has barely begun.

Augustine Anthony, writing for  Reuters, observes, "The attack is bound to compound the fears of investors and allies, who have been worrying about chronic political instability and Islamist militant violence in the nuclear-armed country."  The economy is also in crisis, with the rupee having falled to a record low of 77.45 to the dollar.
