Likely Pakistani President Mentally Ill?

James Joyner | September 05, 2008

Mark Hosenthal, writing for Newsweek in a piece titled "Fears About a Would-Be Leader’s Mental Health," notes that newly released medical records show that "as recently as last year, doctors hired by Zardari had diagnosed him with mental problems including dementia, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder."  Hosenthal quotes Rep. Pete Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, "Typically, we wouldn't want that kind of person" involved in a nuclear chain of command.   He also cites two anonymous American officials who contend that the revelations are " a legal ploy designed to stall corruption cases against him."
