Yushchenko Threatens to Dissolve Ukraine Parliament

James Joyner | September 03, 2008

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has threatened to dissolve parliament and call elections after the collapse of the country's ruling coalition, BBC reports. Yushchenko declared that, "A political and constitutional coup d'etat has started in the parliament" after  Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's party pushed through laws curtailing presidential power.

Roman Olearchyk, reporting for the Financial Times, suggests that this crisis was sparked by Russia's incursion into Georgio, which "has raised fears that Moscow could next target Ukraine" but notes that this turmoil, coming just before the September 9 Evian summit on EU integration, "is unlikely to help Kiev’s bid for speedy integration with the EU and NATO."
