Cyber Attack Shuts Down Twitter and Facebook

Yesterday, Twitter, Facebook, and other popular social media sites were brought to a halt by distributed denial of service attacks.  It appears the target was a lone blogger in Georgia and the attack was timed to coincide with the anniversary of Russia's invasion of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

China-Europe Relations a One-Way Street

Sino-European relations are a one-way street going in China’s direction.  A recent report describes it as “unconditional engagement,” a “policy that gives China access to all the economic and other benefits of cooperation with Europe while asking for little in return.”

In its latest report entitled Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World, the National Intelligence Council has made various predictions about the continuing and changing influence of globalization around the world. It is argued that “as some countries become more invested in their economic well-being, incentives toward geopolitical stability could increase.” This is positive.

The National Intelligence Council’s “Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World” report considers likely scenarios for nearly all strategic global issues, including nuclear proliferation, terrorism, and climate change.  Climate change in particular is an issue that we will be faced with on a daily basis two decades from now.

A panel of Iran experts addressed the "best-case scenario" for U.S.-Iran relations at the Atlantic Council.  Dr. Kenneth Katzman, a Middle East scholar at the Congressional Research Service, presented his Atlantic Council-commissioned Compendium of Policies, Laws and Regulations that govern U.S. relations with Iran, and the discussion followed.
